Debt advice on rent arrears

Having a roof over your head and being in the warmth are the basic securities in life. If you are unable to pay your rent, you could be at risk of being evicted by your landlord, with or without a court order, depending on your tenancy agreement.

Rent arrears are a priority when it comes to prioritising debt. The following tips list how to manage debt -

- List all your debts in priority order with debt arrears at the top

- Work out how much you can pay towards your debts each month, after subtracting your expenses from your income.

- Remember once you can afford to pay your rent again, you will need to pay your arrears alongside this.

- Work out how much you can pay each creditor each month.

- You may want to negotiate with your landlord first, on how you can pay the arrears in a more affordable way.

Benefits to help pay rent

You may be able to qualify for Tax credits, Council Tax benefit or Housing Benefit if you are on a low income. You can also contact your local council to see if you qualify for extra benefits, if your Housing Benefits doesn’t cover your rent.
